Tips for using this result

  • Check the SRI listing to see whether your good or service has a 0% or 5% rate.
  • On the invoice, VAT must appear separately from the taxable base.
  • To remove VAT, don’t subtract 15%: divide by 1.15.
  • The rate can change by executive decree; always confirm at sri.gob.ec.

What is the VAT rate in Ecuador?

The current standard rate is 15%. The Internal Revenue Service (SRI) confirmed this in Circular NAC-DGECCGC25-00000006: if there is no executive decree changing the standard rate, the last one set (15%) remains in force. Article 65 of the Internal Tax Regime Law allows the President to set it between 13% and 15%. There is also a 0% rate for goods and services listed in the law and a 5% rate for construction materials.

How is it calculated?

  • Add VAT: total = base × (1 + rate). At 15%: base × 1.15.
  • Remove VAT: base = total ÷ (1 + rate). At 15%: total ÷ 1.15.
  • VAT: total − base.

Example: $100 + 15% VAT = $115. And if a final price is $115, the base is $100 and the VAT is $15. Subtracting 15% from $115 would give $97.75, which is incorrect.
