Tips for using this result

  • Stop using the card while you pay it off: otherwise the plan won’t move forward.
  • If you have several cards, decide the order with the avalanche or snowball method.
  • Schedule automatic payment a couple of days before the due date.
  • Compare with the cost of paying only the minimum.

How do I get out of credit card debt?

The first step is a plan with numbers: how much you will pay each month and when you will finish. This simulator calculates it in two ways: with a fixed payment (it tells you in how many months you clear the debt and how much interest you pay) or with a target time frame (it tells you what monthly payment you need).

How does the simulator calculate?

Each month it adds interest to the balance (annual rate ÷ 12) and subtracts your payment. It repeats the process until the balance reaches zero. It assumes you make no new purchases on the card and that the rate doesn’t change. If your payment doesn’t even cover the month’s interest, the tool warns you: in that case the debt would never go down.

Strategies that help

  • A fixed payment, not the minimum: the minimum payment drops as the balance drops and stretches out the debt; a fixed payment shortens it.
  • Avalanche: if you have several debts, pay the one with the highest rate first.
  • Snowball: pay the smallest one first to build motivation.
  • Negotiate or consolidate: sometimes a lower rate cuts the cost a lot; compare the total cost before deciding.

Signs you need help

If you use one card to pay another, if you can only manage the minimum payment for several months in a row or if you get late-payment charges, it is time to review your budget and talk to the institution. Our guide on how to negotiate a debt with the bank can point you in the right direction.

Frequently asked questions

How long will it take me to pay off my card?

It depends on the balance, the rate and your monthly payment. Enter your figures in the simulator to see the exact number of months and the interest.

What happens if I keep using the card while paying it off?

The balance goes up again and the plan gets longer. For it to work, it is best to freeze card use until it is paid off.

Is it better to pay a fixed amount than the minimum?

Generally yes: a fixed payment larger than the minimum reduces the time and total interest.

Does the simulator include late fees?

No. It assumes on-time payments and a constant rate. Late fees make the debt more expensive.
