Tips for using this result

  • The rate changes everything: at 24% instead of 12% over 36 months, interest more than doubles.
  • Always ask for the total cost of credit (with insurance and fees).
  • If you can afford a higher payment, a shorter term saves a lot of interest.
  • Simulate the full schedule in the loan payment calculator.

These values are calculated with the French method (fixed monthly payment) and sample nominal annual rates. They are not offers from any institution: they help you understand how the payment and total cost change.

Total interest at 12% a year: $661.85 over 12 months; $1,297.63 over 24 months; $1,957.15 over 36 months; $2,640.24 over 48 months and $3,346.67 over 60 months.

How is the payment calculated?

With the French method formula: Payment = P × i / (1 − (1 + i)−n), where P = 10,000, i = annual rate ÷ 12 and n = number of months. For example, at 12% a year, i = 0.01; over 36 months the payment is 10,000 × 0.01 / (1 − 1.01−36) ≈ 332,14.

What the table doesn’t include

  • Mandatory insurance (for example, credit life insurance).
  • Origination or administration fees.
  • Taxes or levies that exist in your country.

That is why, when comparing real offers, use the total cost of credit that the institution is required to disclose in many countries, and check that it is authorized by the regulator.

Which term makes sense?

The shortest term you can comfortably afford. A long term lowers the payment but makes the loan more expensive. Check your borrowing capacity before deciding.
